“I was 12 years old when I met this guy that made me feel on top of the world. He was 23 at the time that I met him.
I had self-esteem issues and he made me feel better about myself…well, as time went on we had sex. After that he told me that he wanted me to call him “DADDY.” I didn’t know what that meant at the time, so I didn’t ask.
One day I ran away from school and that night he told me that if I loved him and wanted somewhere to sleep then I will have sex with this man. And that is how the beginning of pain happened for me.”

-Tanisha, Georgia survivor of sexual exploitation

Does it just mean prostitution? Although the terms are related, they mean very different things.

“Prostitution” is when someone performs sexual acts in exchange for money, drugs, clothes or a place to stay.

“Commercial sexual exploitation of children” is when kids under eighteen are involved in prostitution, stripping, or pornography and someone else makes money off of it.

Most importantly, commercial sexual exploitation is a type of child sexual abuse.
